God: The Love of the Father

This week’s post is by Sophie who proofreads my blog. Shout out to her!!! Do enjoy and share:

The Lord is mighty and wonderful in His ways

In The way in which He orchestrates a series of events.

He is perfect in His timing

Never too late and always on time

I have learnt that it is when we find rest in Him that life begins to make sense in the chaos

It’s such a privilege to know that We have a loving Father who is ever so gracious and merciful

He looks out for His own

Allows us to experience the pain of life

But yet causes something beautiful to come out, life anew

For when He has tried us, we will come forth as gold!

So in the pain, in the happiness

I have joy because the joy of The Lord is my strength

I take comfort in knowing that He will never leave me nor forsake me

I take my pride in Him

Allowing His love to pierce through my soul

I honour Him

Allowing Him to captivate me with His wondrous works

In all things, I surrender all

With my arms wide open

No fear, No doubt

Nothing but trust!

God: All that glitters is not Gold

I was reading Malachi 2 some weeks back and was amazed at what I found:

1 And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you.

2 If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart. KJV

Curse or Blessing

This amazed me simply because these are times when a lot people claim to be blessed, in spite of their ignorance as to what blessings are. A lot of people claim material possessions as blessings. They view illegal favours and recognition as blessings. To sum it up, most times what they claim to be blessings have no connection to God. This doesn’t mean God doesn’t bless them. After all, He provides for every living thing on the earth as in Matt 4:45:

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. KJV

But as said in verse 2, if we don’t give glory to His name, then He can and has cursed our blessings. It is natural to desire the things of life, it is how ever bad to envy those who have such and a lot worse to envy blessings that are cursed. Imagine going out of your way to do what whomever you admire did to get to where he/she is and lost your soul in the way? (Matt 16:26) It’s easy to look at people and envy them but do you ever really know the source of their material possessions or what they had to do to obtain them? The current story of Diezani Allison-Madueke is a startling example as to how far someone would go to achieve their aim.

All that glitters is not gold

Now I assume you’d want to argue that this was said concerning the priests and not to us all, but as was said in 1 Peter 2:9-10:

9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. KJV”

My point? The fact that you are being blessed doesn’t mean you should be conceited, you have to remain humble, be self-aware and make sure you check always that you give glory unto the name of God. As the probably clichéd saying goes “all that glitters is not gold”.

Here’s your proof

Do you believe in a higher being? Yes? No? Undecided? I totally get you. As I stated in a preceding post, Here’s your sign, the basis of Christianity is on faith which in itself isn’t a logical thing. So logically, any approach to it from the point of logic is illogical in itself. A while back, in a discussion with a friend on some tough recruitment questions from some of the world’s biggest firms, the question ‘Do you believe in a higher power?’ came up. Playing on the pun ‘higher power’, I applied mathematics to it and without a definite end in mind I ended up answering him.

What’s 2^2?

The answer is 4 right?

What’s 4^3?

64 right?

Now what’s ∞^∞?

I’m all ears?

Did I hear you say ∞?

Did I hear you say ∞^∞?

I want a numerical solution as in the earlier questions.

Any answers?

No uh? 😦

I thought so.

Life is beautiful in that at times the answer we seek is staring us right in the face and yet we are blinded to them.

The answer is that God is infinite.

And so is His love.

Just as we can never put a numerical value to ∞ or ∞^∞ as they are both indefinite terms, we can never truly put a definition to God. We refer to ourselves as the one, four times a lady, the cat with nine lives and so on, but who really can plainly state an aspect of their lives that is infinite without it being limited by time, space and resources? If we as humans are numbers with absolute values it would be plausible to take it that God is quantifiable to ∞. Why would we believe that infinity is allowed in mathematics only but can’t be applied to other aspects of knowledge? I believe this is an applicable theory in explaining the relationship between God and humans. Agree? Disagree? Do let me know. 🙂

Happy People

…and R. Kelly sings: Happy people, yeah yeah yeah, keep the world, turning turning turning, I believe that, happy people, yeah yeah yeah, keep the world, dancing dancing dancing…and then with the end of the song comes the dance, do you remember? Step to the left, step to the right, stand around and break it down tonight, bring it on up, move in close…*record scratches*…err sorry to cut you off like that but couples dancing isn’t the subject of today’s post, atleast not those types.

My favourite saying applies a great deal in this issue, “Ignorance is bliss, knowledge is power”. I remember as a child, the concept of homosexuality was foreign, it wasn’t something we children knew or spake about. Playing ‘mummy and daddy’ and being teased by friends about girls they assumed or knew we liked was natural. Except for a few isolated cases where there was a reference to it or an occurence that seemed like a bizzare exception, it wasn’t talked about. All of a sudden it was everywhere! In everyday secondary school conversations, in jokes, in disses and so on. It grew in consciousness and gradually went public, such that it finally had to be recognised by law. Gay people or ‘Happy’ people started requesting for their rights in public after being more or less in the background for centuries.

Liberalism, as everything else has its advantages and disadvantages. From a liberal point of view anyone can say and do whatever they desire but not when marriage comes in. Now marriage has always included God, and thus it would be weird if I spoke about it from a liberal point of view. Civil union has been something they used but that’s not enough, every gay boy has always dreamt of his own white wedding, to the man he ‘loves’, in the church daddy and daddy got married in. Oh well this is what the bible says about that:

Lev 18:22
You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination. (ESV)

Lev 20:13
If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them. (ESV)

Romans 21-32
For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them. (ESV)

The above texts are from the old and new testament. Verses 26, 27 and 32 are of particular interest. It’s clear that God is clear on this issue, those who practice and those who give approval to them that do. So what do I think?

If I saw a group of Christians running after a gay person to assault or murder them, would I join them? No because that’s in the old testament and a lot of those don’t apply today. Do I support gay marriage? No. If a gay person asked me if that way of life is right would I reply in the affirmative?  No. Do I think gay couples should adopt children? No. Why not? I believe God gave us free will and so if gay people want to have sex in their privacy then that’s their decision as God isn’t in support of premarital sex and a lot of us engage in it. So if we use our freewill to sin against God then I feel we shouldn’t point fingers. Whatever decisions they make is between them and God, and only He can judge. However, I don’t support their marriage especially NOT in a church of God. Again I quote Myles Monroe “Every problem in the society can be traced back to the family”. God made a system of family where the father and mother have a blessed union and produce children who are raised with the love of God and who are given an identity and where there are no kids, the adopted children should be raised by a father and mother. With the increase in divorce rates, increase in the number of single parents, reducing number of hours career parents spend with their children in a week, I think it would be a step further in the wrong direction for children to be raised in a home with ‘parents’ of the same sex.

I’m of the opinion that we should focus our attenion on returning to the core values that now only exist in storybooks and build our families the way it was intended. The institution of marriage which has been ridiculously abused needs to be placed back on the pedestal where it should be. In the beginning God saw Adam was alone and He made a woman from and for him. Simple! Let’s all get back to the only functional plan for society so that we can all live under the blessings of God as happy people.

Letting go…

In just that moment I didn’t care, I wanted to hurt you like you hurt me
When would it stop?
You apologise for the same things, the few times you do that is
Never stopping to see things from my point of view, how dare you?
The pride in your aura suffocates the air
Imagine the sun growing and melting the planets one by one, that’s the way my love for you burns away
How long till there is none left?
How great?
The heat that melts the sun
The cold that freezes hell over
Is that really possible?
Is it ever black and white?
Like the earth with only land or with water only?
So many little pricks, like acupuncture, only with all the pain that should come with it
They all sum up till I bend or you break
It’s tiring; I can’t keep fighting you for us
So I’m letting go…

I deserve to know, it’s only fair really
Telling me you forgot, making me look silly
It wasn’t you alone, sharing is caring
But now you don’t care so you refuse to share
The fact that it’s buried doesn’t mean its dead
If in daylight, it can be exhumed without fear
The skeletons in our cupboards we dread
Trust me, I can keep my composure during closure
Will I ever get to know?
Should I move on or wait for tomorrow?
Life is never fair
Live life to the fullest
Oh how we settle for less
Time is the road we can’t cross
But love came alive on the cross
Someone said life is a play we don’t get to rehearse
The cursor blinks still, waiting for the story to be finished
Questions still unanswered
So I ask to let go…

My conscience is clear, I tried my best
Can’t give you what I don’t have
But I give you what I want back
Sincere love the best way I know how
You’re only ready when I’m gone
Like a damaged womb with many children unborn
Or like a vampire who doesn’t wake to the sun
In Gulliver’s land who are the Lilliputians?
And so my actions go unnoticed
Little acts from a big heart
Isn’t that what matters?
But we are mere matter
In the end, nothing really matters
Our errors are enough
Past, present, future
A continuous cycle
Does it ever end?
Yet, we’re given one life to live
Goodbye to the past
The present is a present and I embrace it
The present is the past when the future is present
So I reach for the future and as for the past
I’m Letting go…

How far will you go?

A friend shared this on facebook and it seemed appropriate to share as it relates to this topic.

“I recall dad telling me about a man in my neighbourhood who became popular for engaging in money rituals just to buy the 80’s edition of the Honda Prelude. You wouldn’t buy that car for 50k today. Some other guy brutally murdered his brother, (whom their father gave cash to travel for the purpose of re-stocking their warehouse) just because he wanted 2 acquire the rave of the moment Pathfinder jeep. That same vehicle is now better described as a coffin. I remember as a kid, my whole street converged to watch a truck deliver a very large satellite dish to my neighbour’s house. Today a dish one tenth that size delivers 5 times the value and is in almost every student’s hostel room. What about the Volkswagen Santana, Mercedes Benz V boot, 505 Evolution, Toyota Crown, all overtaken by latest models of Camry, Honda, Bugatti, Bentley, X6, Acura and Infinity? …. Vanity. Some ladies left their true loves because some rich guy then persuaded them with a Daewoo Racer, which turned out to be the only car they ever owned till today, while enduring the most terrible marriage life. They found out, albeit too late that true love is invaluable, that intangibles are to be cherished over tangibles. A friend declared drinks because he launched the Nokia Communicator for over hundred grand in 2002. Today that phone would embarrass the owner and is a joke compared to the low cost and everyday phone. What about d MTN sim card that many people went extra miles before they bought for over 30k? Today you will not buy it at N100 because all networks are begging people to even take it for free. People are still making the most horrific sacrifices over ‘vanity’ and make enemies over worthless material things. What can I say? Look back at that one thing you want to kill or die for today and see what becomes of it tomorrow. There is absolutely nothing you can’t achieve, all u need is a little time and patience and you will thank God without regrets.”

Really is amusing how far people would go to get what they want and it also is extremely amusing how far people would run from what they need. So what do you want and what do you need? That’s a question I have struggled to implement over the years. I remember hearing a sermon of T.D. Jake’s where admitted he had issues and that one of the things that discourages Christians is when their leaders act perfect. This makes them feel like they would never get to that level of ‘perfection’. There are those issues a lot of us believe we can’t defeat and as such we decide consciously or unconsciously to live with them. They keep us stagnant, we don’t grow past them. They are the big issues that keep us from noticing the small ones. Oh yes, if you don’t get rid of the big issues, you would find it hard finding or paying attention to the lesser ones. It’s only after victory over the big issues that we’d notice the numerous lesser ones that are huge when looked at collectively. Now don’t get it twisted, I know I write mostly from an idealistic point of view, but Darola has got his own issues as well. I’m working on them, I’m far from perfect believe me, but as my favourite motto goes “The pursuit of perfect” (Lexus). As T.D. Jakes said we all have our contradictions.

My point simply is how far would you go to get what you want? But would overlook and learn to live with the things you need to get over. There is only one perfect being, God and He is at the end of our ‘pursuit of perfection’. How far would you go to get that A grade you want? Or that girl you love? Or those clothes you crave for? Or that healing you need? Or that contract you want? To get that contract you would invest your time, thoughts and money. For that girl you’d go all the way with all you’ve got and even make a fool of yourself. We often talk about how creative and smart Nigerians can be when they want to get bad things done and yet we hardly channel it into the things that would benefit us all. If you want something lasting, as long as eternity, something that wouldn’t be outdated in a couple of years, something that you need, then you’ve got to give it all the time, attention and sacrifice it deserves.

1 Cor 2:14-16

14But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 16For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

John 4:23-24

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

To get to that level of spirituality that we all need, we need to dedicate time. It’s like a business, you can’t get what you don’t give.

Side note: I just want to thank God for adding a year to my life. I’m grateful. 🙂

Here’s your sign

Hello, been a minute. Two weeks actually, my phone and laptop decided on a vacation without getting my consent K. As the Americans would say, “It’s probably the Russians”. In that time as well my friend Sade got married and this is me wishing her hubby and herself God’s blessings in this new phase of their life! It happened in Ibadan, a place I haven’t been to in ages and one thing caught my attention, a sign “Lanlatu Memorial Plaza”. Lol!!! Yes, I share your thoughts. I have never come across a memorial plaza, ever! If a school, a church, a library, a hospital yes, but a plaza? That’s an out-of-Lagos experience I won’t forget in a while, oh well, on to my insight…

Mark 8:10-13

10 And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.

11 And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him.

12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.

13 And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side. KJV

Most people are looking for signs, in all sorts of places, magic, spirits and aliens while others are looking for signs from God, proof that He does exist and that Jesus is indeed His son. These Pharisees that met Jesus did the same thing and as above we can see his reply to them. Jesus came to grant salvation by making the ultimate sacrifice, and He gave us the choice to make (John 1:12). Also from Hebrew 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” KJV, we see that the basis of Christianity isn’t a logical thing, it is spiritual (1 Cor 2:14 “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” KJV). So instead of waiting for Jesus to “show” why don’t you pray and ask for faith to believe and for the spiritual things to be made clear to you? Mark 9:24. I believe that even if Jesus “showed” Himself, there would still be some slaves that would hold on to their chains for its said;

Jer 17:7-10

7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.

8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. KJV

Did you get that? From 7 & 8 we see that there is good in trusting God but in 9 we see the truth about the heart of man. If the heart of man is desperately wicked, what makes you think seeing Jesus would change it? Paul might have been an exception, but are we all exceptions to the rule? Prov 28:26 says “He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.” KJV and from Jer 17:10 we see it’s the heart the Lord tries, not our accomplishments or wealth. So are you still waiting for some sign before you believe? Really? He has done His part and told us what to do, our work is cut out for us already and the clock is ticking.

In conclusion, Mark 8:34-38 ”And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” KJV.
